Happy World Water Day! As a swimsuit company, we have water on the brain a lot – whether we’re swimming in the pool, laying out by the ocean, or of course, staying hydrated in the sun. It’s something a lot of us take for granted but there are so many people in the world who don’t have clean water to drink or bathe with, and many of them spend hours each day walking to get water from nearby sources, which can keep women and children from getting an education.

There are tons of ways to save water and to help those in need get it, so in honor of World Water Day, here are five to get you started!

1. Time your showers

Showering is a huge culprit of water use, and there are a few ways to reduce the amount you use to bathe. If you currently shower more than once a day, try to rearrange your schedule so you can cut it down to only once. After that, try to make your showers shorter by using a 5-minute timer or make it fun by listening to music and only staying in for two songs!

2. Plant drought-resistant flowers and shrubs

Instead of filling your yard with plants that require constant watering, landscape with cacti, succulents, and other shrubs that don’t require much to grow. Pay attention to your lawn and only water when it needs it, and when you do, water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.

3. Run appliances only when needed

Try to avoid running your dishwasher or washing machine when it’s not completely full. If you do need to run it, don’t use the pre-rinse feature and adjust the water levels according to how full the appliance is. Also, pay attention to how often you need to wash your clothes. If something hasn’t been soiled, you could probably wear it again before you wash it!

4. Try a Meatless Monday

Animal foods like meat, dairy, and eggs take a lot more water to produce than veggies. Even if you can’t commit to going fully vegetarian or vegan, try to reduce the amount of meat you eat each day, perhaps by trying a Meatless Monday challenge every week!

5. Buy a Lime Ricki swimsuit

At Lime Ricki, we donate a portion of the proceeds from each purchase to Charity: Water – a non-profit organization bringing clean water to those in developing countries. So while you’re enjoying the sunshine in your new suit, you can rest assured you’re making a difference in someone’s life at the same time.
