Classic Swim Style Comparison: Dress vs Skirt
This season we had two classic swim silhouettes that left us wondering which is better: a skirt or dress?
Trends come and go so quickly, sometimes we feel like we're barely grasping them before they slip away and become “so last year”. Which is why we usually opt for classic swim style: timeless pieces that will contribute to your wardrobe year in and year out. So here's our review of each option, considering both as swimsuits with the silhouette of a minidress.
Style Comparison: Swim Dress vs. Swim Skirt
There is something so classic and timeless about a modest one-piece swimsuit, don’t you think? We certainly do! The inspiration behind the Lime Ricki Swim Dresses came from classic swim styles in the earliest decades of women's swimwear designs.
Explore our blog for more on the fascinating history of women's swimwear.
Our first swim dress was our classic Black Swim Dress, which remains a best-selling option. But we love to see our swim dress in fun florals and chic polka dots too. With an A-line hem and spaghetti straps, the swim dress is modest and does not hug curves. This swim style will boost your confidence and magnify your cute, fresh sense of style.
Our collection of modest swim skirts and shorts offers a wide variety of style and coverage options, all of which also come in extended sizes. High-waist swim skirts with flirty ruffle hems have been a Lime Ricki staple for a while. The swim skirt with bottoms is easily paired with any Lime Ricki swim top - a great piece to keep in your collection of mix and match swimwear!
This year we also released the Capri Classic Skirt with Bottoms as part of The Sisters Collection! (Plus some really cute one-pieces!) With a second silhouette, swim skirts will take the first round of this contest.
And we can't help but award some points for the convenience and versatility that two-piece swimwear offers during a long day at the beach, poolside, or on-the-go with kids at the waterpark.
Swim Skirts Win the All-Around
In a head-to-head comparison of two classic swim looks, dresses and skirts, swim skirt is the winner! We love having a full coverage swim bottom that we can mix and match with any swim top, or even wear as an everyday skirt. Let us know in the comments which one you like better: the classic skirt or the high-waist with ruffles.

Celebrating The Lime Ricki Sisters Collection
Here at Lime Ricki, we’re constantly working on new and trendy designs for our mix and match swimwear. And while each launch is special, our latest one was especially near and dear to our hearts – The Sisters Collection! After years of staying behind the scenes, we wanted to create a collection that truly represents who we are as women (and sisters!), and we believe this launch is the perfect way to encompass all those elements. So if you’re interested in how we created this stylish yet mature swimwear line, then keep reading. We’re going to share some behind-the-scenes information about our inspiration for the drop, and why it’s so special to us!
Meet The Sisters!
In case you’re new here, we’re Nicole, Jennifer, and Colette – the sisters who started it all! We come from the ultimate adventure family and were lucky enough to follow along with our parents as they traveled the world. We’ve lived on a Navajo reservation, spent six weeks traveling across Europe, and then spent two more years exploring pyramids and riding camels in Egypt. When we all lived in the same state as adults, we wanted to find something we could all do together. And after a frustrating swimsuit shopping experience, Lime Ricki was born. We’ve spent the past 16 years designing stylish and supportive swimsuits for every body!
The Making of The Sisters Collection
For the Sisters Collection, we knew we wanted to create something that truly resonated with us and represented who we are. That meant drawing inspiration from things like our childhood experiences, favorite colors, and bold prints – all the things that make us, us! For this collection in particular, we wanted the pieces to showcase everything we love about the gorgeous Italian coast. Our mood board was full of palm trees, block prints, striped beach umbrellas, beautiful foliage, and the colorful villages of Cinque Terre. Our vision resulted in stunning swimsuits that we’re extremely proud of – and it seems like you love them, too!
This collection of mix and match swimwear is bursting with vibrant colors, playful patterns, and trendy designs that not only capture our essence as sisters but serve as an accurate representation of Lime Ricki as a brand. If you know us, then you know we love our bright colors and bold prints, and you’ll find both in this collection. From tropical florals to classic stripes, you can mix and match your favorite pieces to create a look that's uniquely yours. We even launched a new one-piece that features a stylish V-neck and an adorable attached belt!
From Designers to Models: Our First Time Stepping Forward
There’s one other thing that makes this collection even more special – this was the first time we modeled our swimwear ourselves! This was a pretty big deal for us, as we’ve been content with working behind the scenes for so many years. But this collection was so special to us that we felt it was finally time to take our own advice and show up in our suits – for ourselves, and for each other. It was an empowering experience, and we were thrilled to have this opportunity together!
An Extra Special “Thank You”
Ultimately, this post is our way of saying “thank you” to our amazing customers. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you, and we’re so grateful for your continuous support after all these years. We see all of your encouraging comments on our socials, and we’re just so happy you’re here. So here’s to many more years of Lime Ricki – we hope you continue to follow along on this adventure with us!
Modern History of Swim Tops and Tankinis
Picture this: it’s the summer of 2023, and you’re ready to hit the beach or pool for a fun-filled adventure. You pull out your favorite swim crop top that’s flattering and supportive in all the right places. As you admire your suit, you might start thinking about how much swimwear has changed over the years. Trends come and go, but there’s never been a more inclusive and celebratory time than now! Swimsuit options abound, ranging from modest tankinis to peplum swim tops and dainty bralettes. Even full coverage swim tops have become trendy again!
The evolution of styles is truly fascinating – especially to swimsuit enthusiasts like us! So today, we're going to be exploring the history of women's swim tops and tankinis. From the vibrant and audacious styles of the 1980s to the trendy and diverse options we have today, there’s a lot of ground to cover. Let's dive in – starting with the 80s!
The 1980s: Making a Bold Splash
The swimwear trends of the 1980s featured bold and vibrant designs like high-cut one-piece suits and daring bikinis with neon colors and graphic prints. The era also saw the rise of athletic swimwear for active beachgoers. This decade celebrated individuality and self-expression, reflecting the energetic fashion of the time. Here’s a closer look at different options:
- Triangle Bikini Tops: The classic triangle bikini top was an iconic symbol of '80s beach culture. It featured triangular cups with thin straps that tied around the neck and back.
- Halter Tops: Halter tops were another popular swim top choice in the '80s. These tops featured straps that tied behind the neck, creating a chic and flattering look. Halter tops were often adorned with eye-catching prints, neon colors, or metallic accents.
- One-Shoulder Tops: Asymmetry was very on-trend in the '80s, which is seen in the one-shoulder top style. They featured a single strap or sleeve and were available in various cuts, including bikini tops and tankinis.
- High-Cut Tops: The '80s were known for high-cut swimwear, and this extended to the tops as well. Tops featured a deep V-neckline, creating a lengthening effect for the torso.
- Sporty Tops: With the rise of the fitness craze, sporty swim tops became popular. These tops often featured racerback designs, offering both comfort and freedom of movement. They were favored by active beachgoers and gave off a sporty, athletic vibe.
The 1990s: Minimalism and Sporty Vibes
In the 1990s, swimwear trends began to shift towards simpler and sportier styles. Bandeau tops became popular, as they offered a clean, minimalist look. Tankinis also evolved, now available in a wider variety of styles – women embraced racerback tankinis for their enhanced comfort. The top also expanded to include different lengths, from cropped tops to hip-length options. Here’s a quick breakdown of popular tops from this era:
- Bandeau Tops: Bandeau tops were common in the 1990s. These were strapless and featured a straight-across neckline that accentuated the shoulders and collarbones. They often came in solid colors or simple patterns, embracing a simplistic look.
- Bralette Tops: Bralette-style swim tops also gained traction during the ‘90s. These tops featured soft cups without underwire or excessive padding. They provided a more relaxed and natural silhouette, offering a balance between comfort and style.
- High-Neck Tops: High-neck swim tops became increasingly trendy during this decade. These tops featured a high neckline often accompanied by a halter-neck design. They provided more coverage and a sleek look, giving a nod to the era's sporty fashion trends.
- Racerback Tops: Reflecting the athletic influence of the ‘90s, racerback swim tops became quite the craze. These tops had straps that met in a Y-shape at the back, allowing women to move more freely.
- Cropped Tops: The swim crop top was introduced in this era! These tops featured a shorter length, typically reaching just above the belly button. They were available in various styles, including bandeaus, halters, and tankinis.
- Longline Tops: Another trend we saw often in the 1990s was longline swim tops. These tops extended lower on the torso, often reaching the hip area. Longline tops provided additional coverage and a more modest option while maintaining a fashionable appeal.
The 2000s: Retro and Contemporary Designs Combine
The 2000s brought a new wave of creativity to swimwear fashion. Swim top trends featured a mix of nostalgic styles, bold experimentation, and diverse choices. Triangle bikinis, push-up tops, and plunging halter necklines emerged as popular options, showcasing a fusion of retro influences and contemporary designs. Let’s look at a few of these styles:
- Classic Bikini Tops: The classic bikini top remained a staple during the 2000s. However, there was a surge in new variations – in addition to the triangle top, halter-neck bikini tops, push-up styles, and bandeau tops were now available.
- Halter Tops: Halter tops continued to be popular during this decade. These tops featured straps that tied behind the neck, providing a flattering and supportive fit. Halter tops often incorporated different embellishments, such as rings, beads, or decorative knots.
- Push-Up Tops: The 2000s also saw the rise of swim tops with push-up padding. These tops were available in various styles, including halter, bandeau, and underwire variations, providing options for different body types and preferences.
- Bandeau Tops: Bandeau tops remained trendy in this era but received contemporary updates. Along with the classic straight-across neckline, these tops started featuring additional details such as ruching, center cinches, or twist-front designs.
- Tankini Tops: Tankini tops flourished during the 2000s, offering a versatile alternative to bikinis and one-piece swimsuits. Modest tankinis came in various lengths, including cropped styles, mid-length options, and longer tops that reached the hip.
The 2010s: Embracing Versatility and Coverage
In the 2010s, swimwear became even more diverse and inclusive. High-neck tops, crop tops, and bralette-inspired options gained popularity, offering a mix of comfort and style. Ruffled and off-the-shoulder designs added femininity, while sporty and active-inspired tops catered to the athleisure trend. Here’s a closer look:
- Bralette Tops: Bralette-style tops gained immense popularity in the 2010s. These tops featured soft cups without underwires, providing a comfortable silhouette. Bralettes often incorporated intricate lace or crochet detailing, offering a stylish and feminine touch.
- High-Neck Tops: High-neck options became a favorite among fashion-conscious women in the 2010s. These tops featured a neckline that extended higher on the chest, offering more coverage and a modern, chic look.
- Crop Tops: Crop tops remained trendy in this era, now featuring shorter lengths. They allowed women to show off their midriffs while maintaining a trendy appearance. Crop tops came in numerous styles, including bandeau, halter, and tankini variations.
- One-Shoulder Tops: Asymmetry took center stage in the 2010s, and one-shoulder swim tops were seen everywhere. These tops were available in different cuts, including bikini tops and tankinis, allowing women to express their individuality.
- Sporty Tops: The influence of sportswear was evident in swimwear during the 2010s. Sporty swim tops featuring racerback designs, scoop necklines, and athletic-inspired details gained traction.
- Longline Tops: Longline swim tops that extended lower on the torso were a prominent trend in this decade. These tops offered additional coverage and were available in various styles, including bikini tops and tankinis.
The 2010s also brought a newfound focus on size inclusivity, and we saw brands beginning to expand their size ranges and offering swim tops designed to celebrate all body types. Sustainable swimwear options also gained popularity, causing some brands to incorporate eco-friendly materials and production practices into their design processes.
Today: Self-Expression and Individuality
In the present day, swimwear trends truly celebrate individuality and freedom of expression. Women have an abundance of options, from classic bikinis to stylish one-shoulder tops, cut-out details, and even retro-inspired swim tops. Here are some popular swim trends we’ve seen for the 2020s (so far):
- Sustainable and Eco-friendly Materials: In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of sustainable swimwear options. Brands are incorporating recycled materials, such as recycled nylon or polyester, regenerated fabrics, or innovative eco-friendly materials. This reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and the desire to make conscious clothing choices.
- Textured Fabrics: Swim tops with textured fabrics have gained popularity in the 2020s. Ribbed, ruched, or smocked swim tops provide visual interest and add dimension to the look, elevating the piece overall.
- Cut-Out Details: Cut-out swim tops have also become a popular trend in recent years. These tops feature strategic cut-outs in various shapes and placements, adding a contemporary and alluring element while still maintaining a modest look.
- Wrap and Tie-Front Styles: Wrap and tie-front swim tops have gained momentum in this decade. These tops feature a wraparound or tie-front design, creating a versatile and adjustable fit that can cater to any style.
- Athleisure-Inspired Tops: Sporty-inspired swimsuit tops with racerback designs, high necklines, and supportive straps are still trendy choices, as we’ve seen throughout the decades. These tops offer a blend of comfort, functionality, and style.
- Retro and Vintage-Inspired Tops: Nostalgia for retro and vintage fashion has also been a big influence on recent swimwear trends. Bandeau styles and sweetheart necklines have a throwback vibe while still providing a timeless, feminine look. Our peplum tops are a great example, as they were inspired by the vintage look from the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Inclusivity also continues to be a significant focus, with brands expanding their size ranges and embracing diverse body types. For example, Lime Ricki tops are available in a wide variety of flattering cuts, such as traditional bikinis, tankinis, one-pieces, and swim crops + bralette tops. We also focus on making swim + tankini tops that are just as stylish, even though they offer more coverage. We believe it’s important to cater to different preferences and provide options for women of all shapes and sizes.

Your Guide to Lime Ricki’s Eco-Friendly Swimwear
Are you ready to dive into a fabulous season filled with sun, sand, and stylish swimsuits? This summer, take your swim style to the next level by making the switch to sustainable swimwear! Here at Lime Ricki, we’ve always selected our swimsuit materials with careful consideration, but some of our latest designs feature responsibly made fabric for more sustainable swimwear options.
A Commitment to Sustainability
When it comes to swimwear, we often prioritize finding pieces that are trendy and flattering instead of worrying about how sustainable the materials are. What if we told you that you could have all of those amazing features while also making a positive impact on the environment? That's where Lime Ricki comes in! We’re taking sustainability seriously by focusing on four areas: our commitment to using eco-friendly fabrics, facilitating an ethical manufacturing process, only working with small-batch production, and using digital printing. Let’s take a closer look at each sustainable practice:
- Eco-Friendly Fabrics
So, what makes our swimwear fabric so special? Well, for starters, many of our swimsuits are crafted from recycled materials. We work with a company called Estilmar, which takes post-consumer waste and transforms them into a high-quality, durable fabric. This eco-friendly material is called Ecowave, a fabric made with recycled ecological yarns from plastic bottles which is perfect for swimwear. By repurposing these materials, we’re doing our part in reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or our oceans!
- Ethical Manufacturing
Another aspect of our sustainable swimwear that we’re incredibly proud of is our commitment to ethical manufacturing practices. Our swimsuits are sewn in responsible factories here in the United States and in Mexico City. We visit the factories each year (often multiple times a year) to ensure our suits are sewn with the quality and care that we expect. We also prioritize working with factories that provide fair wages and safe working conditions for their employees. This ensures that every Lime Ricki swimsuit you own is sustainably and ethically made.
- Small-Batch Production
All of our swimwear is produced in small batches to reduce our environmental impact. To moderate excess yardage, we avoid ordering over-stock fabric in the first place. If we do have leftover pieces, we always look for creative ways to use remnants, such as making our adorable hair scrunchies or using them for prototypes in the design process. It's important to us to be as responsible as we can throughout the manufacturing process, and this is just one additional step!
- Digital Printing
Here at Lime Ricki, all of our fabric prints are digital! Unlike wet printing, digital printing eliminates the need for extensive water usage, reduces waste generation, and consumes less energy. Additionally, it offers precise ink control, minimizing waste and allowing for customization and on-demand production, which reduces overproduction and inventory waste. Overall, digital printing contributes to a more environmentally friendly fashion industry by conserving resources, reducing pollution, and offering flexibility in design and production.
Save The Planet with a Stylish Lime Ricki Suit

Women’s Swimwear Across the Decades: How Swimsuit Designs Have Evolved
Swimwear has come a long way since its modest beginnings, acting as an interesting reflection of societal changes, fashion trends, and the liberation of women over the years. From the 1800s to the 1900s, women's swimwear styles witnessed a remarkable transformation, influenced by shifting attitudes towards modesty, athleticism, and even personal expression. Today, we’re going to embark on a captivating journey through time, identifying the popular swimwear styles that have graced beaches and pools across the decades. Let’s explore the fascinating evolution of swimsuit materials and styles, and see for ourselves how swimsuit design has changed over time!
The 1800s: The Dawn of Bathing Machines and Bloomers
Swimwear in the early 19th century prioritized modesty and coverage for women, focusing on practicality rather than fashion. Swimsuits resembled long-sleeved dresses with skirts that extended below the knee. Fabrics like wool and flannel were commonly used, although they became heavy when wet. Women also wore bloomers underneath for additional coverage. Mobile huts on wheels called “bathing machines” were popular due to the privacy they offered, which allowed women to enter the water discreetly. Overall, early swimwear styles were reflective of the conservative societal attitudes towards modesty, which limited participation in swimming as a recreational activity during that time.
The 1900s: Embracing the One-Piece
As the 20th century dawned, women's swimwear started to shed some layers, evolving from the conservative styles of the previous century to reflect the start of a change in societal norms and attitudes toward women’s fashion. While Victorian influence remained, swimsuits became slightly less cumbersome. One-piece swimsuits emerged, which featured puffed sleeves, high necklines, and ankle-length skirts, and still catered to the prevailing emphasis on modesty. Additionally, swimwear fabrics transitioned from heavy wool and flannel to more lightweight materials like cotton. Ultimately, the 1900s marked a transition towards more practical and athletic-inspired swimwear, setting the stage for further transformations in the decades to come.
The 1910s: Athleticism and Simplified Silhouettes
In the 1910s, women’s swimsuits underwent a significant transformation, departing from the heavily modest styles of the previous century. The swimwear of this era showcased a shift towards more practical and athletic designs. One-piece swimsuits continued to prevail, now featuring tank-style tops and knee-length hemlines as opposed to the long, restrictive swim skirts of the past. Additionally, these swimsuits were often constructed from lightweight fabrics like cotton or jersey. The silhouettes were less constricting, allowing for greater freedom of movement, while still maintaining a level of modesty compared to contemporary styles. Colors and patterns also became more prominent, although modesty was still the priority.
The 1920s: The Roaring Twenties and the Rise of the Modern Swimsuit
The 1920s brought about a revolutionary change in women's swimsuit styles, reflecting the societal shifts towards liberation and the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. Swimsuits in this decade embraced a more daring and revealing aesthetic; one-piece suits became shorter and often featured hemlines rising above the knee and sleeveless or halter-neck designs. The iconic flapper style also influenced swimwear, as new loose, unconstructed silhouettes that allowed for greater freedom of movement became common. Swimsuit materials shifted to jersey and silk, due to their lightweight and clingy properties that also accentuated the female figure.
The 1930s: Elegant Lines and Functional Designs
The 1930s witnessed a blend of elegance and practicality in women’s swimsuit design. One-piece swimsuits continued to dominate, now featuring elongated, streamlined silhouettes that became more form-fitting and tailored compared to the previous decade. Halter necklines, low backs, and modest leg openings were popular, as well as decorative elements such as ruching, bows, and sweetheart necklines. The use of synthetic fabrics like latex and rayon introduced stretch and improved fit. Swimwear of this era embodied an understated glamour, reflecting the fashion trends of the time while providing both style and functionality for beach or pool outings.
The 1940s: War-time Austerity
Swim styles of the 1940s were influenced by the prevailing societal circumstances of World War II. With fabric rationing and a focus on practicality, swimwear designs became more modest and utilitarian. One-piece swimsuits remained popular, now featuring higher necklines and fuller coverage. However, the two-piece "tankini" did emerge, introducing high-waisted shorts paired with a top that covered the midriff. Due to fabric shortages, swimsuits were typically made from blended materials such as cotton and rayon. Prints and patterns became less common, and solid colors prevailed. The swimwear styles of the 1940s reflected a sense of patriotism and resilience, with women adapting to the limitations of the time while still enjoying beach and pool activities.
The 1950s: The Bikini Revolution
The 1950s were a transformative period for women's swimsuit styles, embracing a more glamorous and feminine aesthetic. Bikinis gained popularity and became a symbol of liberation and confidence. The two-piece swimsuits featured high-waisted bottoms and structured tops, often with halter necklines or bandeau styles. Polka dots and floral patterns were very popular, adding a playful and youthful charm. One-piece swimsuits were still common, with designs often accentuated by ruching or strategic cut-outs. This era exuded elegance and embraced the hourglass shape, reflecting the cultural shift towards a more refined approach to fashion.
The 1960s: Swinging Sixties and Experimentation
The 1960s brought a period of experimentation and liberation in swimwear. Bikinis continued to be popular – bottoms featured lower waists and higher leg cuts, while tops ranged from modest halter necklines to more revealing bandeau styles. One-piece swimsuits also transformed, with the introduction of cut-out details and innovative designs. Vibrant colors, psychedelic prints, and geometric patterns were prevalent, capturing the essence of the Swinging Sixties. This decade celebrated freedom and self-expression, representing the growing influence of youth culture.
The 1970s: Freedom and Individual Expression
The 1970s marked a distinctive era for women's swimsuit styles, characterized by a fusion of bohemian and athletic influences. One-piece swimsuits remained popular, with high-cut legs and low-cut backs, often adorned with colorful patterns and graphic prints. Additionally, the emergence of the bikini continued, featuring variations such as string bikinis and high-waisted bottoms. The influence of the boho-chic aesthetic introduced crochet details, macramé accents, and tie-dye patterns, adding a free-spirited vibe. Swim styles of the 70s encapsulated a sense of individuality, embracing the trends and cultural movements of the time.
The 1980s: Fitness and High-Cut Leg Openings
The 1980s brought a vibrant and bold evolution in swimwear styles, reflecting the era's emphasis on glamour, fitness, and self-expression. Bold neon colors, metallic finishes, and geometric patterns were popular, as well as high-cut legs and high-waisted bottoms that accentuated the legs, creating an elongated silhouette. Bikinis continued to dominate trend-wise, and popular styles included string bikinis, bandeau tops, and high-impact designs adorned with ruffles or decorative details. Additionally, the influence of aerobics and fitness culture introduced high-performance swimwear, often featuring lycra or spandex fabrics for stretch and support.
The 1990s: Minimalism and Versatility
The 1990s marked yet another shift in women's swim styles, embracing a more minimalistic and laid-back aesthetic. Swimsuits of this decade embodied a sense of simplicity and functionality. One-piece swimsuits featured sleek and streamlined designs, often with high-cut legs and low-cut backs. Bikinis often boasted minimalist triangle tops, low-rise bottoms, and string ties. Solid colors (especially black) became fashionable, reflecting a more understated and sophisticated look. Swimwear styles of the 90s exemplified a blend of comfort, versatility, and a pared-down aesthetic, capturing the essence of the era's casual and effortless fashion.
The 2000s: Retro Revival and Bikini Dominance
The 2000s saw a diverse range of swimwear styles, influenced by a mix of fashion trends, pop culture, and a focus on individual expression. This era also witnessed a resurgence of retro styles, with vintage-inspired swimsuits making a comeback. Bikinis often featured bandeau tops, halter necklines, and push-up padding. Low-rise bottoms became a trend, and the use of bold prints, patterns, and embellishments became more prevalent. In contrast, there was also a rise in minimalist swimwear, featuring clean lines and solid colors for a sleek and sophisticated appeal. The swimwear of the 2000s showcased a fusion of trends and personal preferences, highlighting the diversity and freedom of choice that characterized the era's fashion landscape.
The 2010s and 2020s: Embracing Inclusivity and Individuality
Over the past two decades, we have witnessed yet another shift in the world of swimwear. These eras have been characterized by a celebration of diversity, body positivity, and a focus on individual style. Swimsuit designs have become more inclusive, accommodating different body types, and offering a wide range of styles and options for people to express their unique personalities. Let's explore some of the styles that have become popular during this period:
- High-Waisted Bikinis
The high-waisted bikini made a comeback during the 2010s and continued to dominate the swimwear scene into the 2020s. This style harkens back to the vintage silhouettes of the mid-20th century while offering a contemporary twist. High-waisted bottoms provide more coverage and support around the midsection, accentuating the natural curves of the body. They have been embraced by many, as they offer a flattering and comfortable option for those who desire a bit more coverage without sacrificing style.
- One-Piece Swimsuits with Cut-Outs
One-piece swimsuits transformed in the 2010s and 2020s with the introduction of cut-outs. These strategically placed openings add a touch of allure and style to the classic one-piece silhouette. Cut-outs can be found around the midriff, sides, or back, allowing for creative and eye-catching designs. This style offers a balance between modesty and fashion, appealing to those who seek a unique and fashionable swimwear option.
- Athletic-Inspired Swimwear
The rise of active lifestyles and athleisure fashion influenced swimwear trends in the 2010s and 2020s. Athletic-inspired swimwear emerged, featuring sporty details such as racerbacks, mesh panels, and performance fabrics. These swimsuits are designed to provide both functionality and style, catering to those who enjoy water activities, such as surfing, paddle boarding, or beach volleyball. The focus is on practicality, comfort, and the ability to move freely while maintaining a fashionable look.
- Mix-and-Match Separates
These decades witnessed a surge in the popularity of mix-and-match separates, offering endless possibilities for personalization and self-expression. This trend allows individuals to create their own unique swimwear combinations by pairing different tops and bottoms. It empowers people to choose styles, colors, and patterns that suit their preferences and body shapes. Mix-and-match separates provide versatility and the ability to create a perfectly tailored swimsuit ensemble.
- Bold Prints and Patterns
Vibrant prints and patterns have become a hallmark of swimwear in these eras. From tropical florals and geometric designs to animal prints and abstract motifs, swimsuits have embraced bold and eye-catching visuals. These prints add elements of playfulness and personality to swimwear, enabling individuals to make a fashion statement while enjoying their time in the sun.
- Inclusive Sizing and Body-Positive Designs
One of the most significant changes in recent years has been the increased emphasis on inclusive sizing and body positivity. Swimwear brands have recognized the need to cater to a diverse range of body types and have expanded their size ranges accordingly. Additionally, swimsuits with features like adjustable straps, ruching, and shirring have gained popularity as they provide comfort and flatter various body shapes.
- Sustainable Swimwear
In response to growing environmental awareness, sustainable swimwear options have gained popularity. Many brands now offer swimwear made from recycled materials or fabrics with reduced environmental impact. These eco-friendly options allow people to enjoy their time at the beach or pool while minimizing their ecological footprint.

How To Elevate Your Beachwear With Accessories
In this post, we’ll be sharing our style tips for using pieces like sarongs, bandanas, scrunchies, t-shirts, and cushion slides to accessorize your beach ensemble. We have a wide range of swim accessories available here at Lime Ricki, so let us show you how to use them!
- Sarongs
Sarongs are a staple when it comes to swimwear accessories. These lightweight, flowy pieces of fabric can be worn in countless ways to enhance your swim look; tie one around your waist as a stylish skirt or wrap it around your torso as a makeshift dress. You can even use it as a cover-up for lounging by the pool. Choose vibrant patterns and colors that complement your swimsuit, and you'll exude effortless elegance!
- Bandanas
Bandanas are super versatile accessories that add a playful touch to any swimwear ensemble, while also protecting your hair and face from the sun! Tie a bandana around your head for a retro-inspired look, or use it as a hair accessory by wrapping it around a ponytail or bun. You can also tie it around your wrist or ankle for a bohemian vibe. We suggest selecting patterns and colors that match your swimwear or a contrasting shade to make a bold statement.
- Scrunchies
Scrunchies have made a huge comeback, and they are perfect for adding a touch of charm to your beach look. Plus, they're gentle on your hair, preventing those annoying hair tie creases when you take a dip in the water! Use a scrunchie to tie your hair up in a high ponytail or a messy bun, giving you a carefree and fun look. We recommend opting for scrunchies in vibrant colors or bold patterns to create an eye-catching contrast with your swimwear!
- T-shirts
Who says T-shirts are just for casual wear? A well-chosen tee can transform your beachwear into a trendy ensemble. Knot a graphic tee at the waist and pair it with high-waisted bikini bottoms or wear it over your swimsuit as a stylish cover-up. Look for tees with quirky beach-themed prints or go with oversized shirts for a relaxed and boho-inspired look. Experiment with different t-shirt styles to find the perfect match for your swimwear!
- Cushion Slides
When it comes to beach footwear, cushion slides are all the rage. They're practical, easy to slip on and off, and provide excellent comfort and support for long beach days! These comfortable slip-on sandals are not only perfect for strolling along the shore, but also add a chic touch to your swimwear. Here at Lime Ricki, we have adorable cushion slides in all sorts of vibrant colors, so you’re sure to find a pair that will match your favorite suits.

Anatomy of a Lime Ricki Swimsuit
At Lime Ricki, we've made it our mission to create high-quality swimsuits for women of all ages and body types. As a women-run small business, we believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in their skin – this means we’re very selective about the swimsuit materials we choose for our suits! In fact, the anatomy of a swimsuit is actually super interesting, and the swimsuit design process can vary depending on whom the suits are intended for. For example, our plus-sized and mastectomy-friendly swimsuits are made with the same quality materials, but they feature a few modifications to make them more beneficial for these women.
If you want to know how our expert design team creates the newest looks each season, then this is the post for you! Read on to discover more about the Lime Ricki research, manufacturing, and editing processes we use to bring our new collections of stylish, modest swimwear to life. In addition to the behind-the-scenes of our design process, we’ll also share how we alter our basic designs to be more inclusive, focusing on our swimwear for plus-sized women and those who have undergone mastectomy surgeries.
Modest Swimwear for Every Body at Every Age
At Lime Ricki, we are proud to support and work with women of every age. We believe that by working with others, we get a better collection of swimsuits designed to support all sorts of needs. From our seasonal models to our employees, we get excited to collaborate with new people and celebrate every opportunity to represent women in the swimwear industry – that's why we still never airbrush or photoshop our models! Our designs were created to be inclusive, modest, flattering, and stylish, all at the same time.
As sisters who proudly belong to the women-over-50 crowd, we are also huge proponents of maintaining and prioritizing an active, healthy lifestyle. We do our best to incorporate features into our suits that make them ideal for people like us who live active lifestyles. In the past, we have designed swimwear that easily transitions to activewear, as well as various pieces that can double as both a swimsuit and exercise attire. Our swim dresses are a great example, as they’re perfect for just about any occasion. Whether your kids' activities keep you busy, or you just feel like activewear keeps you more energized, we get it and design with you in mind.
But our design process goes further than the swimsuits’ silhouettes; we spend just as much time choosing the perfect patterns and bold colors that are meant to boost everyone’s confidence. Some of our unique designs are created with color blocking, pattern mixing, or strategically draped and ruched fabrics. This creates a more balanced silhouette, which is flattering on every woman, regardless of body type. Additionally, our swim styles also offer more coverage than the average swimsuit, particularly in the hips, thighs, chest, and tummy areas. This is intentional on our end, as we aim to provide more comfort and modesty.
Ultimately, we believe that the coverage of our suits paired with the stunning designs are what makes us adored by so many women. We understand the struggle of shopping for a swimsuit all too well, and we know that the experience can be even more daunting for those of us who prefer a look with more coverage. Sure, there might be plenty of one-pieces and tankini options, but they’re never as cute as the traditional bikinis. Instead, these "blah" suits often only come in boring colors and patterns – how are you supposed to feel confident in that kind of suit? We were tired of the limited (and ugly) options, so we decided to do something about it. And thus, Lime Ricki was born; we’ve been designing the kind of swimsuits we’d want to buy ever since.
Plus-Size Swimsuits: So Every Body Can Feel Cute and Confident
At Lime Ricki, we believe that every body is a beach body, no matter what shape or size. We’re proud to offer inclusive sizing in all of our swimwear collections, carrying swimsuits up to 4X. We have designed these suits accordingly; our plus-size swimsuits are created with different accommodations in mind to meet the unique needs and preferences of plus-size bodies. Our plus-size swimsuits are not just larger versions of regular swimsuits. Instead, they are tailored to fit and flatter the unique curves of a fuller figure. These suits are made from high-quality, stretchy swimsuit materials that provide extra support while enhancing the natural shape of the body. For our swimwear, we’ve chosen a well-researched blend of nylon and spandex that offers plenty of comfort without sacrificing the support you need in a suit.
One of the key features of Lime Ricki's plus-size swimsuits is the use of adjustable straps. The straps on our swimsuits are wider and adjustable, providing extra support for those with larger busts. Additionally, the straps are designed to be comfortable and not dig into the shoulders, making them ideal for long days at the beach or pool. There’s nothing worse than trying to enjoy a day in the sun, but struggling due to an uncomfortable swimsuit. With Lime Ricki suits, you can say goodbye to your days of feeling awkward and stiff, and instead focus on what really matters – getting back in the water, and boosting your confidence in the process.
Another essential design aspect of our plus-size swimsuits is the use of strategically placed patterns and colors. These patterns and colors help to accentuate curves and draw attention to the areas of the body that the wearer wants to highlight. They are also intentionally placed to create a slimming effect, so you can feel confident and beautiful while having fun in the sun.
It’s important to note that these patterns are the same ones we use for our straight-size swimsuits – we don’t alter them for larger sizes, so everyone can enjoy the same stylish prints and bold colors that make Lime Ricki swimsuits so adored. This is a drastic difference in comparison to some of the plus-size suits you’d find in the average store. Instead of relying on dark colors and slimming designs, our goal is to provide plus-size women with the same fashionable options that are usually (unfairly) reserved for straight-sized women.
Mastectomy-Friendly Swimsuits: Designed For Women Like Us
We love every piece of swimwear that we've designed, but some collections hold a special place in our hearts. We understand that for women who have undergone a mastectomy, finding a swimsuit that is comfortable, flattering, and functional can be a seriously difficult task. As breast cancer survivors ourselves, we understand the unique needs of these strong women. Nicole was diagnosed with breast cancer three times in her twenties and carries the BRCA1 mutation that causes us to be at a higher risk. Jennifer also carries this mutation, and she beat ovarian cancer in her 40s! While Colette does not carry the mutation, she’s been by our side through it all.
Since we have such a personal relationship with breast cancer, we feel a deep connection with other women who are in the fight at well. Because of this, we used our cancer experience to design swimwear specifically tailored to meet the needs of others who have undergone the surgery. Our mastectomy-friendly swimsuits aim to provide swimwear that helps you feel secure and confident in your body while enjoying your time in the water.
There are many additional features included in the design of these suits that aren’t found in a traditional Lime Ricki swimsuit design. Our mastectomy-friendly swimsuits feature a pocketed bra with adjustable straps, providing the necessary support for prosthetics. The pocketed bra is also designed to be comfortable and not irritate sensitive skin. Additionally, our mastectomy-friendly swimsuits feature the use of the same high-quality, stretchy fabrics that provide support and enhance the natural shape of the body. While these are the same fabrics we use for all of our suits, the nylon-spandex blend is extremely soft and comfortable, making it ideal for women who have undergone surgery and may have sensitive skin.
But our mastectomy swimsuits are more than just a comfortable line of swimwear. We really wanted to create stylish suits that would boost the confidence of women who have or are currently battling cancer. These styles include higher necklines, adjustable straps, comfortable fabrics, and additional support. The swimsuits feature patterns and colors that are both trendy and timeless, making them a great choice for women of all ages and styles.
As you can see, this is a cause that’s very close to our hearts, and we’re incredibly proud of our mastectomy-friendly swimsuit collection. If you’d like to check out our adorable options, feel free to browse the Flourish and Bloom collection – a line we created in partnership with our friends at Stage. These swimsuits were designed to celebrate strength and joy in every stage of life. Plus, a portion of every purchase from the collection is donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in support of women and families searching for a cure.
Behind-The-Scenes of Our Design Process
Now that we’ve reviewed the basics of how we create inclusive suits for all bodies, let’s take a closer look at our swimsuit design process. The general design process at Lime Ricki begins with a team of designers who come up with various ideas for new swimsuits. These ideas are then presented to the rest of the team, including our product development and marketing members, for feedback and refinement. Our design team also takes into account feedback from customers, including their preferences for colors, patterns, and styles.
Once the design is finalized, we create a sample of the swimsuit, which is then tested for fit, comfort, and durability. Lime Ricki is committed to creating swimsuits that fit well and feel comfortable, so we always ensure that each swimsuit is designed with the customer in mind. For this process, we pay close attention to three aspects: materials, fit, and style.
High-Quality Materials
We use a variety of materials in our swimsuits, including nylon, spandex, and polyester. These materials are chosen for their durability, stretch, and comfort. At Lime Ricki, we also use eco-friendly materials, such as recycled polyester, whenever possible. We’re always trying to reduce our environmental impact as often as we can!
Additionally, one of the unique features of Lime Ricki swimsuits is the use of UPF 50+ fabric, which is a specially-treated material that protects from the sun's harmful UV rays. This feature is particularly important for customers who spend a lot of time outdoors or participate in water sports, but it’s beneficial for anyone who’s going to be exposed to the sun. For more information about our materials and our SPF swimwear, check out another, more in-depth post for your guide to our swimsuit materials.
The Perfect Fit
At Lime Ricki, fit is a top priority. We proudly offer a wide range of sizes, from XS to 4X, to ensure that every customer can find a swimsuit that fits well and feels comfortable. In addition, we also design a wide range of swimsuits in various styles, including one-piece, two-piece, and tankini. This allows us to accommodate different body types and preferences, allowing every woman to find their dream swimsuit from Lime Ricki.
To make sure our customers find the perfect fit, we provide detailed sizing information on our website, including exact measurements for each size we offer. Additionally, our Fit Finder quiz is a resource we provide to aid our customers in finding the right swimsuit size. This quiz was designed by a professional bra fitter and uses measurements from thousands of real women. Based on your response, we’re able to recommend different sizes and styles that will work best for you. Customers can also contact our customer service team for assistance with sizing and fit!
Wide Range of Styles
Here at Lime Ricki, we’re best known for our stylish and colorful swimsuits. We offer a wide range of prints and patterns, including florals, stripes, and solids, to appeal to different tastes and preferences. We also have numerous designs in a variety of styles, including high-waisted bottoms, halter tops, and off-the-shoulder tops, to accommodate different body types and styles.
In addition to our regular swimsuit collections, we also feature limited edition collections, which include unique prints and styles that are only available for a short time. We love designing these collections because they’re a great way to keep our brand fresh and exciting while also appealing to our lovely customers who are looking for something unique and special.
Responsible Production
Our suits are made in responsible factories right here in the United States. We value the long relationships we have built with our factories and consider them not just partners in our business, but also friends. We visit the factories each year (often multiple times each year) to ensure our suits are sewn with the quality and care that we expect and to make sure conditions and practices are safe and ethical for all of the sewers and workers.
We’re proud to share that all of our swimwear is produced in small batches to reduce our environmental impact. We do not order over-stock fabric so we can reduce excess yardage, and we look for creative ways to use remnants, like making hair scrunchies or using them for prototypes in the design process. It's important to us to be as responsible as we can during the manufacturing process.
We hope this post on the anatomy of a swimsuit has provided some interesting insight into our design process. Whether you're plus-size or have undergone a mastectomy, we have a swimsuit that will fit and flatter your unique curves! Lime Ricki swimwear is made from high-quality, stretchy fabrics that provide support and enhance the natural shape of the body. Specialized designs also feature adjustable straps and pocketed bras, providing the necessary support for larger busts and prosthetics.
Lime Ricki swimsuits are designed to provide comfortable, supportive, and flattering swimwear options that help you feel confident and comfortable in your body. What makes our swimwear perfect for you? Let us know and tag us in your posts on TikTok or Instagram!

How To Style Your Favorite Swim Dress
Lime Ricki swim dresses are a great option for anyone looking for a multipurpose swimsuit. Featuring a dress on the outside and a one-piece suit underneath, this suit is ideal for a variety of activities. Whether you’re swimming in the ocean, getting a workout in on the tennis court, or grabbing a bite to eat after a day at the beach, you’ll stay supported and comfortable in this swimsuit. Plus, since these dresses already look like “acceptable” everyday attire, you don’t have to worry about modifying them for different activities. You can head from the pool straight to the farmers’ market, just as you are! Of course, if you want to dress up your look, you can always add accessories. We’ll share more of our tips for elevating your swimwear in this post.
Product Spotlight: The Tennis Court Collection
Our Tennis Court Collection is your one-stop shop for all the versatile swimwear you need. For this collection, we were inspired by two themes – the bright, bold colors of 80s preppy style, and the retro vibe of our favorite summertime sport, tennis! We wanted to create stylish pieces that could easily be worn on and off the court (and really, everywhere in between). For example, the cycling-inspired design of our bike shorts pairs perfectly with our bralettes and knotted crop tops, letting you go from your workout to the beach with ease. These suits are perfect for all your favorite activities, but they’re also great for daily wear – especially the Garden Party Bike Short and the Garden Party Swim Dress!
Elevate Your Look With Accessories
One of the easiest ways to make your swimsuit look more presentable is to accessorize. For example, most of our swimsuit tops can double as everyday tank tops when paired with a pair of shorts or a skirt. Throw on a colorful bandana or a sun hat, and you have the perfect beach-to-town outfit with minimal effort. If you’re looking for some accessory inspo, check out our Women’s Accessories page. We have a variety of t-shirts, bandanas, crewnecks, and cushion slides in bold colors for you to choose from, so you can add your own flair to any outfit!

Lime Ricki Swim Dress Review
Design: Supportive and Flattering
Lime Ricki swim dresses offer a unique two-in-one look that’s perfect for wearing in and out of the water. On the outside, you’ll first notice the dress, which features adjustable straps for easy customization. Underneath, you’ll find a one-piece bathing suit complete with built-in bust support, including a double-lined shelf bra and sewn-in foam cups (except for size XXS, which has no padding). Our swim dresses are available in an inclusive range of sizes XXS to 4X and are flattering on all body types. Lime Ricki swim dresses were designed with your comfort in mind, but they still offer plenty of support and coverage as well. Beyond having a supportive design, our swim dresses are available in a variety of colors and patterns. Bold patterns such as Garden Party and Claus are perfect for making a statement, but if bright colors aren’t your thing, you can find the same dress in Black, for a neutral look.
Material: Comfortable and Protective
The Lime Ricki swim dress is made of 80% nylon and 20% spandex, so it’s super comfortable, making it perfect for a variety of activities. The nylon and spandex combination also allows the suit to maintain its original shape after each use/wash. These suits are designed with UV 50+ protection in the fabric, so you can stay safe while enjoying a day soaking up the sunshine. No more worrying about getting burnt through your suit! Lime Ricki swimsuits feature fabrics designed to protect against SPF damage, so you don’t have to worry about your suit becoming discolored from your sunscreen. There’s nothing worse than having your favorite swimsuit get ruined by a sunscreen stain, so we make sure all of our suits are protected from the beginning.
Performance: Versatile and Swim-Approved
The best thing about these swim dresses is that they can be worn just about anywhere! The dress design offers plenty of coverage, so you can wear it straight from the beach to dinner without worrying about changing outfits or finding a cover-up. Need to pop into the store before hitting the pool? Swim dresses are perfect for running errands! Having this kind of versatility in a piece can be extremely helpful, especially when the weather gets so warm that you can hardly stand being out of the water. Swim dresses let you go about your day without worrying about what you’re wearing. Plus, they’re so comfortable, you won’t want to take them off!
Even though swim dresses provide more coverage than a traditional two-piece suit, you won’t feel held back or restricted in them. In fact, you might actually appreciate the extra support the dress has to offer! The combination of nylon and spandex provides just the right amount of support and flexibility, so you can continue to participate in your favorite activities, both in and out of the water. We really love this piece, and we think you will, too!
