For more than a decade, husband-wife indie-pop duo Mates of State have been creating their unique blend of energetic synth-pop tunes, releasing albums and touring the world. The band only seems to get better with age, improving their sound with each album they release. The duo is known for their use of male/female vocal harmonies and upbeat, quirky pop tunes.
Kori Gardner (vocals, organ, synthesizer, piano, electric piano) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drums, percussion) met and began playing music together back in 1997 and have since released seven studio albums and three EPs as Mates of State. The couple married in 2001 and now has two daughters, who tour with their parents and sometimes help out onstage during the band’s performances.
The band’s seventh album Mountaintops was released in September on Barsuk records and is probably the band’s most polished and energetic release to date. The album starts out with a bang – with some of the band’s best vocal harmonies – and then follows suit with the rest of the band’s discography, combing dance party, synth-heavy tracks with more toned-down ballads.
We’ve listed below the entire Mates of State discography. So if you’re not familiar with the band, go ahead, pick an album and begin there. They’re all great albums and you can start any place you want. And don’t miss out a chance to see the band play live. It’s a party.
